Coconut Oil Herbal Infusions

Herb-Infused Coconut Oil

Some plant constituents are well extracted with water, but some woodier and more resinous plants, like cannabis are better extracted with fat. This infusion will result in a product that can be consumed or used topically.

1/2 cup coconut oil
7 grams dried herb, roughly ground (decarboxylated, if cannabis)

Optional: 2 teaspoons sunflower lecithin. This may help the extraction process and may increase the onset of effects in the body.

Place herbs and oil in mason jar, mix well and close lid. Add about two inches of water to a crockpot and turn on low. Place jar of herbs and oil into crockpot, close lid. And stir mixture every hour. After 6 hours, strain the oil from the herbs and discard the herbs. Allow to cool and it will solidify.

Cannabis Notes:

Cannabis needs to be decarboxylated before consuming by mouth. To decarboxylate cannabis, follow these steps:

  • Place cannabis in a Mason jar and close the lid hand tight.
  • Bake for 30 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool completely before opening jar.

The strength of the cannacoconut oil will be determined by the quality of the herb used. The THC concentration for the various strength of starter material is listed below:
10% THC herb results in a concentration of 30mg per teaspoon
15% THC herb results in a concentration of 45mg per teaspoon
20% THC herb results in a concentration of 60mg per teaspoon

Safety Note: Each person absorbs herbal extractions differently and what works for someone else may not be right for you. With edibles, always start with a very small dose and wait two hours to decide how you feel.
